March 3rd is World Wildlife Day, celebrating the importance of every animal and its role in our ecosystem. From the tiniest insect to the largest mammal, each of these creatures has a place on our planet.

Take the snake, for instance. They might be the world’s cuddliest animal, but they’re crucial for keeping balance across dozens of habitats. Serving as both prey and predator, snakes keep down rodent populations while occasionally becoming lunch for another animal. Turtles bring essential nutrients to beaches when they nest, sloths host beneficial bacteria and fungi in their fur, and without bats, we’d be swarming in mosquitoes.

Everything has a purpose, and preserving a balanced ecosystem is crucial to the health of our world. This World Wildlife Day, say thanks to birds in the trees and the butterflies in your garden, for doing their jobs and protecting our environment.

This award-winning photograph is from the fourth season, “Life in Color”, of the Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Rashid al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) Archive. The Climate Tribe has partnered with HIPA, leveraging the power of photography to inspire global awareness of sustainability and advance climate action.
